The number of Christians in Asia is steadily growing, and in August Pope Francis is to visit South Korea, followed by Sri Lanka and the Philippines early in 2015. However, many Asian countries have one feature in common: they are ruled by a Party-State which is often accused of restricting religious freedom. In this article for La Croix, Benoît Vermander, Associate Researcher ayAsia Centre, examines the presence and influence of Christianity in China, Vietnam, Laos and North Korea, and draws one conclusion: there is still no balance to be struck between the Party-State system and the guarantees of full religious freedom.
