Yuko Kawato graduated from the University of Washington with a Ph.D. in Political Science in March 2010. She received a M.A. in Political Science from the University of Washington and a B.A. with honors in International Relations from Brown University. Her expertise is in Asian security, alliance politics, and civil-military relations. Her doctoral research was on U.S. military bases and protests in Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines, with focus on protesters’ normative arguments and their impact on base policy. She is preparing a book manuscript on this subject for the Studies in Asian Security series published by the Stanford University Press, with a grant from the series sponsor, the East-West Center. She has also published some book chapters on Japan’s non-profit sector and state-civil society relationship.
