On June 27, 2018, lawsuits were filed against a couple suspected of mistreating their daughter, Yua Funato, who died at the age of five. Due to controversy, the public not only accused the family and social services for the mistreatment of Yua but also started movements to demand a change at the state level regarding child protection. The debates focused on police intervention and its legitimacy, questioning the complicated relationship between the family and the public sphere in Japan.
