Media and Democracy: Elections in the European Union and in India

13 mai 2019 à 16 h 00 min - 18 h 00 min

Event in partnership with the South Asia Democratic Forum (SADF), in Brussels on May 13, 16:00 – 18:00. Based on a suggestion by Olivier Arifon (Asia Centre), the debate will be moderated by Jean-Luc Racine (EHESS / Asia Centre).

Compulsory Registration below

In view of ongoing and upcoming important votes in the biggest democratic ensembles in the world, i.e. India and EU, Asia Centre is proud to propose its first event in Brussels with the cooperation of the South Asia Democratic Forum (SADF).

With a focus on the role of medias when such political mega-entities go to the polls, we shall take the opportunity of the presence in Brussels of Andreas Mattsson and Vibodh Parthasarathi, two experts of the relevant issues to debate with us on what can already be observed and potential perspectives on these issues while the outcomes of the Indian election will not be known yet and the European election will be less than two weeks ahead.

Andreas Mattsson is a lecturer and program director at the School of Journalism at the Department of Communication and Media, Lund University. He is also an affiliated researcher at the Swedish South Asian Studies Network (SASNET) and has conducted research and teaching about journalism practice and digital technology in a comparative international perspective. During 2019 and 2020 he is conducting ethnographic fieldwork in Vietnam as part of a research project about social norms and school governance. Besides his university assignments, he works as a freelance journalist for various Swedish and Nordic newspapers and magazines.

Vibodh Parthasarathi maintains a multidisciplinary interest in media policy and creative industries, his most recent work being the edited double-volume The Indian Media Economy (Oxford University Press 2018). Parthasarathi has been at the forefront of media policy research in India and his work has found support from the Ford Foundation, Canada’s IDRC, Social Science Research Council, India New Zealand Education Council, and Open Society Foundation. Parthasarathi’s ongoing research explores media regulation in India, the risks to media diversity, and the emergence of the platform economy.
On extra-ordinary leave from Jamia Millia Islamia (New Delhi), he is Resident Fellow at KU Leuven this Spring besides ongoing affiliations at Central European University and Lund University.
