Peace-Building on the Korean Peninsula: Rethinking the Role of EU – Débat Asie with Prof. LEE Jae-Seung

19 octobre à 18 h 00 min - 19 h 30 min

The debate will take place on Friday, Octobre 19, at 18:00 at Inalco, 2 rue de Lille (Paris 7), Salle des Plaques.
with Prof. Lee Jae-Seung, Korea University, Professor & Jean Monnet Chair
chaired by Jean-François Di Meglio
Korean Peninsula is undergoing a huge political transition. Inter-Korean summits were resumed while the US and North Korea have begun a negotiation for denuclearization. Whereas North Korea’s real intention seems uncertain, hope and concern coexist for the future progress of détente.
The EU has engaged in North Korean affairs with the KEDO process, political dialogues and humanitarian aids. However, these constructive engagements have been stalled since North Korea accelerated her nuclear and missile program. Human rights violation in North Korea also aggravated the relationship. Depending on the progress of North Korea’s denuclearization and liberalization, however, the EU’s engagement in the Korean Peninsula may face another turning point. This lecture will address the contrasting views of ongoing political transition and explore the potential role of EU in the peace building on the Korean Peninsula.
