From Unruly Subjects to Influential Stakeholders: the Changing Role of Companies in India’s Environmental Governance – Damien Krichewsky

3.00

Environmental governance over the last twenty years has been marked by the growing commitment of large companies to pursue sustainable development strategies and involve themselves in collaborative structures alongside public authorities and civil society actors. This article examines this dynamic in the Indian context, where demographic growth and economic development have been accompanied by a major ecological crisis. As a result of unsuccessful implementation, the regulatory framework based mainly on a « command & control » approach has failed to stem corporate contributions to the environmental crisis. In addition, national and state governments are tempted to ease regulations to support the country’s industrial growth. This inadequate limitation of the environmental impact of companies has led to an increase in social conflicts and legal proceedings, which are putting increasing pressure on economic actors and public authorities.

  • Modern development and environmental crisis in India
  • From deficient “command & control” regulations to business-friendly collaborative governance
