India has recently been beset by a wave of violent incidents related to protection of cows, the animal traditionally revered by majority Hindu population. The cow-related mob attacks in various parts of the country, including Rajasthan, have fuelled a pervasive sense of vulnerability among the members of the minority Muslim community as so-called cow-vigilante groups have been carrying out a form of mob justice, summarily beating those suspected of killing, trading, or consuming beef. India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who rode to power in 2014 on a reformist platform, continues toexpress his strong disapproval of violence in the name of cow protection. But mob violence and vigilantism continues because the criminals expect to get away with it. The article argues that if stern action is not taken against those who illegally indulge in mob violence for protecting the
cows, the state and street in India would fuse together to endanger country’s constitutional principles, democratic values and national security.
